Arc Flash Study Software: How to Choose the Right Tool

What should arc flash study software do?

Arc flash study software should support the calculation method, equipment and operating cases required by the project. ETAP, SKM Power*Tools and EasyPower offer arc flash analysis capabilities. Choosing a product is only part of the study: the network data, protection model, assumptions and engineering review still determine whether the results are useful.

Which software families offer arc flash analysis?

The following are examples, not a ranked list or an endorsement. Confirm the available modules and capabilities with the vendor for the version and licence proposed for your project.

  • ETAP: its AC Arc Flash analysis is integrated with network and protective-device studies. DC and high-voltage applications require confirmation of the appropriate calculation approach and module.
  • SKM Power*Tools: Arc Flash Evaluation works within the Power*Tools environment. DAPPER supports network studies and CAPTOR supports time-current coordination; they should not be presented as separate competing arc flash products.
  • EasyPower: provides arc flash analysis alongside short-circuit, protection-coordination and other power-system capabilities, subject to the selected package.

Is relay-settings software an arc flash study tool?

A tool used to configure or manage protection devices is not automatically a substitute for a network arc flash analysis package. SEL acSELerator QuickSet is described by its manufacturer as software for configuring, commissioning and managing devices. Its role should be distinguished from calculating incident energy for the assessed network.

What should you check before selecting a tool?

  • Calculation scope: the required method, equipment conditions and AC or DC application.
  • Network and protection data: representation of sources, equipment, device characteristics and the settings used to establish clearing time.
  • Operating cases: the normal and alternative arrangements that must be assessed, with excluded cases identified.
  • Reviewable outputs: equipment identifiers, stated working distances, assumptions, results and report limitations.
  • Handover: agreed model format, access requirements, revision control and responsibility for future updates.

Will two software packages always give the same result?

Do not assume that matching one headline value proves that two studies are equivalent. Compare their input data, included cases, calculation basis, protection operation and reported limitations before interpreting a difference. Vendor defaults and unverified assumptions should be visible to the reviewer.

What should a consultant explain before the study starts?

Ask which study basis and operating cases are proposed, how missing information will be resolved, and what the deliverables include. A software brand alone does not demonstrate a complete assessment or guarantee compliance.

For ETPL’s engineering scope and deliverables, see the Arc Flash Study service. Prepare the available records using the study input checklist, or explore the wider Power System Studies service.
