Monsoon Electrical Safety Checklist

For Engineering & Maintenance Teams – Prepared by Elegrow Technology

1. Panel & Equipment Safety
Task Status (✓/✗) Notes
Check for water seepage points near electrical panels, switchboards, and control rooms
Ensure all outdoor panels are IP-rated and properly sealed
Perform IR (Insulation Resistance) testing on all critical circuits
Inspect panels for condensation or internal humidity
Verify thermal scanning has been done to detect hot spots
Clean and tighten all cable terminations inside panels

2. Earthing & Grounding System

Task Status (✓/✗) Notes
Measure earth resistance of all pits and ensure values are within safe limits (typically <5 ohms)
Check for corrosion on earthing strips, terminals, and clamps
Verify earth continuity from equipment to main earth grid
Inspect the bonding of metallic structures (like fencing, pipes, tanks)

3. Surge & Lightning Protection

Task Status (✓/✗) Notes
Inspect condition of lightning arrestors and test for continuity
Confirm surge protection devices (SPD) are installed near sensitive equipment
Verify connection of SPD to clean ground path

4. Safety Equipment & SOPs

Task Status (✓/✗) Notes
Ensure electrical PPE is dry, intact, and tested (gloves, boots, mats)
Check for updated electrical safety SOPs specific to monsoon risks
Conduct mock drills and toolbox talks with maintenance teams
Place signage at areas with water exposure or live risk

5. Cables, Trenches & Junction Boxes

Task Status (✓/✗) Notes
Inspect all outdoor cables for physical damage and insulation wear
Ensure cable trenches and pits are dry and covered
Check that cable joints and glands are waterproofed
Use silica gel or moisture absorbers in key junction boxes

6. Maintenance & Shutdown Planning

Task Status (✓/✗) Notes
Plan critical preventive maintenance before peak rain period
Identify alternate power backup routes if waterlogging occurs
Verify protection relay settings and backup coordination are in place

7. Emergency Response Preparedness

Task Status (✓/✗) Notes
Emergency isolation points clearly marked and accessible
Maintenance and safety team contact list updated
Rain kits, waterproof covers, and flashlights stocked
Create a rapid-response flow for faults and electrical incidents

Pro Tip:

“Even facilities with recent Arc Flash Studies or Audits should recheck panel conditions and earthing during monsoon. Conditions change fast inspections must too.”
